Strategic Planning Proposal Committee (SPPC):


In spring 2008, Monsignor Sheeran assigned Dr. Parviz Ansari, Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences, to lead the Strategic Planning of Environmental Sustainability at Seton Hall University. To plan for the development of the strategic planning document, a Proposal Committee was formed of an appointed membership to serve as the Strategic Planning Proposal Committee.

a. Charge to the SPPC Committee:

The task of the Strategic Planning Proposal Committee (SPPC) was to prepare a proposal for the development of a strategic planning process to address environmental stewardship and sustainability at the University, to be submitted to Monsignor Sheeran for his review, by July 2008.

The SPPC proposal will:
  • Develop a planning proposal
  • Draft vision and mission statements for the University
  • Define the strategic planning process and give more specific structure to the roles of the strategic planning committees

University Stewardship Committee (USC):

The University Stewardship Committee (USC) will be in charge of developing a set of recommendations for promoting stewardship and sustainability at the University. This will include both the short range and long range terms with potential cost and benefit to the university for the proposed recommendation.

USC will develop both short and long term strategies and plans that focus on improving the environmental footprint of the University, and will engage students in the process providing learning opportunities through visible examples of environmental stewardship. This area will concentrate on developing policies and goals on sub-areas that will include but are not limited to:

  • Energy and water
  • Food Services
  • Transportation
  • Waste and Recycling
  • Purchasing
  • Carbon Neutrality

a. Charge to the USC Committee:

Working as an assemblage of sub-committees, define best practices in environmental stewardship and sustainability for each sub-area using a process that will:

  • Define the scope of activity
  • Establish an inventory and baseline for consumption and current practices
  • Identify strategic opportunities for advancing environmental stewardship and sustainability
  • Develop options, alternatives and feasibility assessments for practices
  • Recommend and prioritize goals and objectives to achieve best practices within an implementation plan

Research & Education Committee (REC):

The Research and Education Committee (REC) will examine the greening of curriculum on campus, including but not limited to the feasibility of a new or expanded programmatic approach to both undergraduate and graduate studies at Seton Hall. They will work with the Office of Grants and Research and University Advancement to secure additional funding.

REC will develop both long and short term strategies and plans through outlining the infusion of stewardship and environmental sustainability in undergraduate and graduate education. Starting with the existing programs on campus, such as the Environmental Studies program in the College of Arts and Sciences, a more unified and collaborative approach to sustainability education will be introduced.

Develop, recommend and prioritize strategic goals and objectives to address issues of environmental stewardship and sustainability throughout the curriculum, and promote faculty and student research opportunities.

Community Education & Strategic Partnership Committee (CESPC):

The Community Education & Strategic Partnership Committee (CESPC) will develop a set of recommendations for building an educational awareness among members of the campus community as well as those it partners with, while simultaneously building partnerships with communities and industries in New Jersey and beyond.

CESPC will develop both short and long term strategies and plans by allowing the university to develop a more comprehensive approach to communicating sustainability with the community-at-large. This may include local industries, South Orange and Newark communities and other strategic neighborhoods in the Archdiocese or abroad, as well as on our own campuses.

a. Charge to the CESPC Committee:

Develop strategic goals and objectives that promote an effective communication and educational outreach plan, identify alliances and partnership opportunities, and address environmental stewardship and sustainability at each sub-level by:

  • Defining the scope of activity
  • Establishing an inventory and baseline for current levels of awareness and behavior
  • Developing options, alternatives and feasibility assessments for recommended goals and objectives
  • Recommending and prioritizing goals and objectives to achieve best practices within an implementation plan
